Sickle Cell Education Initiative – Homabay, March 2025 The Chronic Disease Society of Africa (CDS-A) is excited to announce a Sickle Cell Education Initiative scheduled for March 2025 in Homabay County. This educational event is part of CDS-A’s commitment to raising awareness, providing critical information, and empowering communities to better understand and manage sickle cell disease (SCD), a condition that affects many families in sub-Saharan Africa, including Kenya. Purpose of the Sickle Cell Education Initiative Sickle cell disease is a genetic blood disorder that causes red blood cells to become misshapen, leading to blockages in blood flow and significant pain, organ damage, and other complications. Despite its prevalence, awareness of sickle cell disease remains limited in many communities, contributing to delays in diagnosis, lack of proper management, and misconceptions about the condition. This initiative aims to: Increase awareness about sickle cell disease, its symptoms, and its impact on individuals and families. Educate communities on the importance of early diagnosis and the management options available for those living with SCD. Support families affected by sickle cell disease with the knowledge and tools they need to manage the condition and improve the quality of life for their loved ones. Promote genetic counseling and prenatal screening as preventative measures for families at risk of passing on the disease.
